📍 Stouffville, Whitby, Markham, Not in Toronto proper, but close
Puppies $685, adults $585, seniors $200. Includes spay/neuter, vaccines, rabies, microchip, deworming, flea treatment, and a free online vet consultation through Vetster.
Open 7 days a week, 11am-6pm. No appointment needed. You can do a same-day adoption if you arrive early enough. Closest location to Toronto is the York Region centre at 16586 Woodbine Ave, Stouffville.
These organizations don’t have a building you walk into. Dogs live in foster homes. You apply online, get screened, and meet the dog at the foster’s house. Takes longer than a shelter (1–4 weeks) but you get more info about the dog’s personality since the foster knows them well.
Best for: Thorough screening, post-adoption support
📍 Foster-based (Toronto), saveourscruff.org
Puppies $950, adults $850, seniors $550. Includes vet exams, vaccines, parasite prevention, bloodwork, spay/neuter.
Heads up: they also require you to buy a GPS tracker subscription (~$144/year) and complete professional training within 6 months ($250-$850+). So the real cost is higher than the adoption fee.
Thorough screening process. References, home photos, interview. They take it seriously.
Best for: Lifetime support included. Sanctuary dogs for $50.
📍 1405 19th Sideroad, King City, 50-acre property north of Toronto

📍 Foster-based (Ontario), speakingofdogs.com
Flat $550 for any dog. Includes spay/neuter, microchip, heartworm testing, tick-borne disease testing, core vaccines, and fecal testing.
Application, interview, reference checks, home inspection. Must be an Ontario resident. They can say no and they do.
Best for: Golden Retrievers only
📍 Foster-based (all of Canada), goldenrescue.ca
Domestic Goldens $1,000, international rescues $1,500, puppies $1,200. Entirely volunteer-run. They’ve rescued over 5,100 Goldens since 1990.
Application, reference checks, home visit. Puppies are rare. Most are adults or seniors. If you want a Golden and you’re patient, this is the way.
For comparison: a purebred puppy from a breeder in Ontario runs $2,750 to $7,300+. And that usually doesn’t include spay/neuter, vaccines, or microchipping. You pay for all of that on top.
If something feels off, walk away. There are plenty of reputable rescues in this city.
Check toronto.ca, torontohumanesociety.com, and ontariospca.ca for currently available dogs. New ones get posted daily.
Once you've adopted: here's what it'll cost going forward, the best off-leash parks to visit first, and the bylaws you need to know (licence, leash rules, fines).
