Toronto's signature breeds, mapped

Coloured by breed group. Hover for details. Every neighbourhood's most common dog is a Lab or a Golden. The signature breed is the one that shows up here at a much higher rate than elsewhere in the city: the breed that makes this neighbourhood different.

The patterns that repeat

A breed that spikes in one postal area is noise: one breeder, one rescue intake. A breed that shows up over-represented across several neighbouring areas is a pattern. These are the breeds that cluster.

2.0× means twice the citywide rate. 3.0× means three times.

Curiosities

These breeds are too rare citywide (under 500 licensed) for their concentration to mean much about a neighbourhood. More likely one breeder, one rescue, or one very committed owner. Still interesting.

How this works

Every neighbourhood's most common dog is a lab or a golden. That list has been written. This asks a different question: which breed shows up here at a higher rate than the city average?

The method is a location quotient. If an area has 2.6× the citywide rate of greyhounds, greyhounds are its signature breed, even if labs outnumber them 20 to 1. An LQ of 1.0 means exactly the city average.

Source: City of Toronto Open Data, licensed dogs 2023-2026. 165,062 records across 96 postal areas. Breeds with fewer than 20 dogs in an area are suppressed.

What this doesn't tell you

Roughly 30% of Toronto dogs are licensed. This is a sample, not a census.

Breed is self-reported by owners at licensing. Nobody verifies it.

FSAs are postal geography, not neighbourhoods. The crosswalk is approximate.

Small cells (under 20 dogs of a breed in an FSA) are suppressed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common dog breed in Toronto?

Citywide, the most common breeds are Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, and French Bulldog. But the most common breed varies significantly by neighbourhood.

What does “most over-represented” mean?

We use a location quotient to find breeds that are more concentrated in a neighbourhood than you'd expect based on their citywide numbers. A breed at “3× average” means that postal code has three times the expected share of that breed.

Where does this data come from?

All data comes from the City of Toronto's Open Data portal, specifically the Licensed Dogs and Cats dataset. It covers approximately 165,000 licensed dogs across all Toronto postal codes. Only about 30% of Toronto dogs are licensed.

Which Toronto neighbourhood has the most French Bulldogs?

Use the postal code lookup at the top of this page to check your neighbourhood. Breed concentrations vary widely. Some postal codes have 5–10× the citywide average for a particular breed.
