Who are the corporate owners?

Three groups control most of Toronto's corporate vet clinics. Each is backed by a different type of investor.

VetStrategy

PARENTIVC Evidensia
INVESTOREQT Partners (Swedish PE) (Private equity)
SCALE360+ in Canada
KEY FACTA leaked 2019 memo instructed staff not to tell clients about the corporate buyout.

VCA Canada

PARENTMars Inc.
INVESTORMars (family conglomerate, not PE) (Corporate conglomerate)
SCALE180+ in Canada
KEY FACTThe only Big 3 that brands its clinics. Mars acquired VCA for US$9.1 billion in 2017.

NVA Canada

PARENTJAB Holding
INVESTORJAB/Reimann family (German investment vehicle) (Private equity)
SCALE100+ in Canada
KEY FACTNo public clinic finder. NVA deliberately keeps the original clinic name after acquisition.

Smaller groups in Toronto

Juno Veterinary: Claims to be founder-owned and operated. Backed by Round13 Capital. (VC-backed)

VetCor Canada: US-based PE firm Harvest Partners owns VetCor. (Private equity)

VetCare Canada and VEG (Veterinary Emergency Group) each have one Toronto location.

What the evidence says

Corporate ownership of vet clinics is controversial. Here is what the research and investigations have found so far.

CBC Marketplace (January 2025)

Hidden camera investigation found significant price variation across Toronto corporate clinics.

The same procedures were quoted at vastly different prices between corporate-owned locations. CBC also documented upselling practices at several clinics.

Frontiers in Veterinary Science (2025)

Peer-reviewed study: corporate chains had statistically higher prices.

Annual price increases at corporate clinics ranged from 8 to 15%, compared to 6% at independent clinics. The study covered Scandinavia, not Canada, but the ownership groups are the same (IVC Evidensia operates in both markets).

UK Competition and Markets Authority (March 2026)

Vet prices rose 63% over seven years. Mandatory reforms ordered.

The CMA ordered standardized price lists, prescription fee caps, a price comparison website, and mandatory corporate branding. These take effect in late 2026 and 2027. Canada has no equivalent measures.

Important caveat

No Canadian peer-reviewed study has isolated corporate ownership as the cause of higher prices. Vet costs have risen industry-wide due to inflation, post-pandemic demand, new technology, and labour shortages.

The other side

Corporate ownership is not inherently bad. There are real benefits.

Better equipment

Corporate groups can invest in MRI, CT, and advanced diagnostics that most independent clinics cannot afford.

24/7 emergency access

Several corporate-owned hospitals in Toronto offer overnight and weekend emergency care.

Standardized protocols

Corporate networks often have consistent treatment guidelines and drug formularies across locations.

Succession solution

When a solo vet retires, selling to a corporate group keeps the clinic open. Many neighbourhoods would lose their vet otherwise.

How to check any vet

If your clinic is not on this list (or you live outside Toronto), here is how to check.

1

Check the CBC table. CBC Marketplace published a searchable list of corporate-owned clinics across Canada in January 2025.

2

Search PrivateEquityVet.org. A crowdsourced database of private-equity-owned vet clinics. Coverage is strong for Ontario.

3

Check job listings. Corporate clinics post jobs under the parent company name. Search for your clinic on Indeed or LinkedIn and see if VetStrategy, NVA, or VCA appears.

4

Ask directly. Ask the front desk: 'Is this clinic independently owned?' They are not required to answer, but most will.

Common questions

Does corporate ownership mean worse care?+

Not necessarily. Corporate clinics often have better equipment and standardized protocols. But a 2023 JAVMA study found corporate vets reported more pressure to generate revenue. The care depends on the individual veterinarian, not the ownership structure.

Are corporate vets more expensive?+

The evidence points that direction but isn't conclusive for Canada. A 2025 peer-reviewed study in Scandinavia found corporate chains had statistically higher prices and faster annual increases (8 to 15%) than independent clinics (6%). The UK Competition and Markets Authority found vet prices rose 63% over seven years as corporate consolidation accelerated. No Canadian study has isolated this yet.

Why don't they tell you who owns the clinic?+

There is no Canadian law requiring veterinary clinics to disclose corporate ownership to clients. A leaked 2019 VetStrategy internal memo instructed staff not to 'actively communicate to clients' about the corporate buyout. VCA is the only Big 3 group that brands its clinics. VetStrategy and NVA keep the original clinic name.

Should I switch to an independent vet?+

That's a personal decision. What matters most is your relationship with the actual veterinarian, the quality of care, and whether you feel comfortable asking questions about costs. Use this list to know who you're dealing with, then decide for yourself.

What's happening in other countries?+

The UK is further ahead. In March 2026, the Competition and Markets Authority ordered mandatory reforms: standardized price lists, prescription fee caps, a price comparison website, and mandatory corporate branding so pet owners always know who owns their vet. These take effect in late 2026 and 2027. Canada has no equivalent measures in place or proposed.
